Schedule Your Teeth Cleaning in Doylestown
Even with a strict regimen of brushing and flossing every day, nothing can replace the benefits of professional teeth cleaning. If you don’t stick to a strict regimen, professional teeth cleaning is even more important. After visiting our dentists in Doylestown, near Chalfont and New Britain, your smile will look brighter and better than ever, but that’s not all.
Over time, a sticky, bacteria-rich film called plaque, as well as hard deposits called tartar can accumulate. Without special tools, they are difficult to remove. When these deposits remain on the surface of your teeth or below the gum line, they foster the growth of bacteria which produce acids that, if left unchecked, can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
In turn, you may suffer from gum inflammation and infections, and possibly even diseases affecting your whole body. Bacteria present in gum disease is able to easily access the rest of your body via the bloodstream. Be sure to take gum disease seriously before it turns into something much worse.
Clean Teeth = Healthy Teeth
First, we’ll conduct an oral examination to assess the health of your oral tissues. Using either an ultrasonic scaler or metal instruments called curettes, we’ll remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces. An ultrasonic scaler is a hand-held tool with a tiny tip that vibrates at a very high frequency to break up the hardened deposits without damaging your teeth. A constant stream of liquid (called lavage) cools the scaler and washes away debris.
Curettes, on the other hand, are hand-held metal instruments with curves and tapers that allow the dental hygienist to work around and in between your teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, the use of hand-held instruments may be more comfortable. Using only moderate pressure, we can scrub the teeth clean, removing any stubborn buildup, regardless of which instruments we use.
Finally, we polish your teeth with a low-speed rotary brush fitted with a soft rubber tip along with a slightly gritty, toothpaste-like gel. The tip of the brush spins around and polishes the teeth, leaving them clean and shiny.
Is It Painful?
It normally isn’t uncomfortable or painful to undergo a dental cleaning. If your teeth are sensitive and you experience any discomfort, we can apply a topical numbing gel to make the cleaning easier for you.
However, if you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in a while, your gums might be irritated due to bacterial buildup. Therefore, they may become sore or bleed slightly during the cleaning.
You can prevent this bleeding from happening at your next visit by taking certain measures at home, such as rinsing with special mouthwash or utilizing better flossing techniques. The bleeding might also indicate that you need to visit us more frequently. Regularly scheduled cleanings and maintenance will not only keep your smile white and shiny, but they will also help you avoid more complicated, and potentially more painful, dental procedures down the road.
